Choosing ASIC Units Above the 0.05 TH/s Floor

Operators often ask us which unit to buy. The honest answer depends less on the hash-rate badge and more on whether the unit survives your shelf.

Start With Physical Dimensions

Before comparing TH/s figures, measure your shelf:

  • Depth — Unit depth plus 80 mm rear clearance must fit inside the rack frame
  • Height — Full-height units in a 6U half-shelf leave little room for PDU and cable management
  • Weight — Heavier units stress cantilevered half-shelf brackets; verify rail load rating

The 0.05 TH/s Floor

We use 0.05 TH/s as our review threshold because units below that range rarely justify the shelf space, power cost, and cooling overhead in compact setups. That does not mean every unit above 0.05 TH/s is a good buy — it means the unit is worth bench-testing before installation.

Noise Considerations

Units in the 0.05–0.15 TH/s class often run quieter than larger models, making them suitable for converted office spaces. We measure at one metre during bench tests. If your facility has noise restrictions from building management, share those limits during a selection consultation.

Power Draw vs Circuit Capacity

A shelf of four units each drawing 900 W needs a circuit that can sustain 3,600 W continuous — not just momentarily. Factor in PSU efficiency loss (typically 5–8%) and the 15% inrush headroom we recommend.

Used vs New

Used units can offer value but carry shelf-fit unknowns: worn fan bearings increase noise, and prior overheating may have degraded hash-rate stability. We recommend bench testing any used purchase before mounting.
